A baseball cap is six fabric panels sewn into a crown, a button on top and a stiffened brim. Structured caps have a front backed with buckram that holds its shape and stands taller; unstructured "dad hats" have no backing and settle softly onto the head. Crown height changes the face more than color does: a high-profile cap adds height, a low-profile one sits close and quiet.

Wear the brim facing forward and curved rather than flat, and settle the cap so the band sits about a finger above the ears. Fitted caps come in sizes such as 7 1/4; snapbacks and strapbacks adjust, which makes them the easy choice when you fall between two sizes.

FAQ

What is the difference between a structured and an unstructured cap?

A structured cap has a stiffened front panel that keeps its height on its own; an unstructured cap has no backing and takes the shape of your head. Structured caps look sharper and add height, unstructured ones look relaxed and sit lower.

How should a baseball cap fit?

Snug enough to stay on in the wind, loose enough to leave no red line on your forehead. The band should sit level about a finger above your ears, and the brim should not rest on your eyebrows.
