A cowboy hat is a western hat with a tall crown and a wide brim curled up at the sides, in felt for the cooler months and straw for summer. The crown crease names the style: the cattleman has a center crease with a dent on each side, the pinch front is pinched to a point at the front, the gambler has a low flat top, and the gus is high at the back and slopes toward the front.

A western hat should sit level, about a finger above the eyebrows and the ears, never pushed back. Felt and straw cowboy hats both come in fitted sizes, so measure your head before you choose one.

FAQ

What are the main cowboy hat styles?

They are named by the crown crease: the cattleman (center crease, a dent on each side), the pinch front (pinched to a point at the front), the gambler (low, flat crown) and the gus (high at the back, sloping to the front). Most come in felt and in straw.

How should a cowboy hat fit?

Snug all the way round without pressing on the forehead, sitting about a finger above your eyebrows. If it leaves a red line after an hour, go up a size.
